Application for a restricted license
This service is for people whose driver’s license has been revoked by the Société d’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), and who needs to drive before the end of the prohibition period.
Under certain conditions, the SAAQ can issue a special permit called a “restricted licence” before the end of the prohibition period.
There are two types of restricted license:
(1) The restricted license linked to the accumulation of demerit points;
(2) The restricted license linked to a conviction for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol;
The restricted license allows you to drive during the penalty period following the revocation of the driving licence. This period can be 3, 6 or 12 months, and more. The restricted license linked to the accumulation of demerit points only allows you to drive as part of your main job. You must therefore demonstrate to the judge, during the hearing of the application, that it is essential for you to drive a vehicle to carry out your main work.
If your driver’s license has been sanctioned following a conviction for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you can obtain a restricted license to allow you to drive during the period of sanction following the revocation of the driver’s license. It is important to note that in such a situation, the restricted license only allows you to drive a vehicle equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock device.
Restrictions
In order to drive an off-road vehicle, you must have a valid driver’s license. If you hold a restricted license that only allows you to drive a vehicle equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock device, you are not authorized to drive an off-road vehicle, since these types of vehicles cannot be equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock device.
You will not be able to obtain a restricted license if your application is related to the revocation of a class 4C (taxi) driving licence, if you had a learner’s license when your license was revoked, or if your license has already been revoked or suspended in the past 2 years for a Criminal Code offense or for an accumulation of demerit points.
