Although Canada and the United States and Canada have very different legal systems, Quebec and New York State separate resident driving record information. Under the Regulation respecting a reciprocal agreement between Quebec and the State of New York concerning driver’s licenses and violations of road traffic rules, Quebec sends judgments concerning violations of road safety rules to the New York State (and vice versa). Thus, the driver who receives a statement of offense and who pleads guilty will see demerit points added to his New York driving record. Depending on the seriousness of the offence, the driver’s license could even be suspended.
